About FBO
We are a group of cyclists who came together to advocate for bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation in the Flagstaff area. Our initial project was to put on a Bike to Work Week for our community in May 2002. Building on the success we started to expand our efforts to keep people informed of cycling related issues and galvanize support for better facilities, trails, and trail access.
By our sixth Bike to Work Week of 2007, nearly 2000 people had registered their participation on our website. Over 125 workplaces participated in the challenge and hundreds of newcomers to bicycle commuting experienced the convenience and joy for the first time. We are extremely proud of our members work in including school kids into the fold by putting on bike safety classes in elementary schools and running bike events at high schools. We have also been able to collect, resucitate, and giveaway over 220 underused bikes to people who needed them in the past two years.. These efforts were enhanced by the production of our Commuter Bike Map in May 2003.
Through the assistance of a grant from the National Forest Foundation and contributions from corporations, businesses and individuals, we also run an aggressive trail program- including our first temporary paid positions- to expand the participation of all trail users in the management of our local resources and to foster good relations amongst trail-users.
Through these efforts we can help promote and protect recreational opportunities for all users benefiting residents and tourists alike. We are working with local land management agencies on long-term trail planning that will better involve and serve the community. Volunteers have demonstrated their commitment to these ideals by showing up in large numbers - contributing 3000 annual hours at our monthly trail days and by becoming trained for our mobile trail crew.
To date we have over 2,200 registered supporters who are pushing Flagstaff to become the most bike-friendly city in America. Add your name to that list and help our efforts.
